Hair Fall & Hair Loss Treatment in Salem (PRP & GFC)
Losing some hair every day is normal, but noticeable thinning, a widening parting or bald patches are not. Hair loss has many causes, and finding yours is the key to treating it.
Common causes of hair loss
- Pattern hair loss in men (receding hairline, thinning crown) and women (widening parting).
- Telogen effluvium: sudden heavy shedding a few months after fever, illness, surgery, childbirth, stress or crash dieting.
- Nutritional deficiencies such as low iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 or protein.
- Hormonal causes, including thyroid problems and PCOS.
- Alopecia areata: round, smooth bald patches on the scalp, beard or eyebrows.
- Scalp conditions such as dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and fungal infection.
- Hair care practices: tight hairstyles, frequent heat styling, chemical straightening and colouring.
- Medicines that can trigger hair fall.
Finding the cause
Dr. Kiruthika takes a detailed history and closely examines your scalp and hair. Blood tests are advised when a deficiency or hormonal cause is suspected. Most people have more than one contributing factor, and treating all of them gives the best result.
Treatment options
Medicines
Topical and oral treatments such as minoxidil and, for suitable patients, other prescription medicines. Nutritional deficiencies are corrected with supplements.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy
A small amount of your blood is drawn and spun to separate platelet-rich plasma, which is rich in growth factors. It is then injected into the thinning areas of the scalp to support hair growth. A typical course is 3 to 4 sessions about a month apart, followed by maintenance sessions as advised.
GFC (growth factor concentrate) therapy
GFC is also prepared from your own blood. The platelets are activated so they release their growth factors, which are concentrated and injected into the scalp. Sessions follow a similar schedule to PRP.
Intralesional injections for alopecia areata
Medicine injected directly into bald patches to help hair regrow. Read more about intralesional injections.
Scalp treatment
Dandruff and scalp inflammation are treated with medicated shampoos, lotions and, where needed, oral medicines.
Hair transplant consultation
If your hair loss is advanced, Dr. Kiruthika can assess whether a hair transplant is suitable and guide you on the next steps.
Why choose Skintillate
Hair loss treatment works best when the cause is correctly identified. Your assessment, medicines and PRP or GFC sessions are all handled by Dr. Kiruthika, a dermatologist trained at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Frequently asked questions
Is hair fall after fever or illness permanent?
Usually not. Heavy shedding two to three months after fever, dengue, COVID-19, surgery, childbirth or crash dieting is called telogen effluvium. It typically settles within 3 to 6 months once the cause is corrected, though treatment can support regrowth.
What is the difference between PRP and GFC?
Both use growth factors from your own blood. In PRP, platelet-rich plasma is separated and injected into the scalp. In GFC, the platelets are processed further so that the growth factors are released and concentrated before injection. Dr. Kiruthika will advise which suits you.
Are PRP and GFC painful?
Most people feel mild discomfort. A numbing cream is applied before the injections, and any soreness usually settles within a day.
How soon will I see results?
Hair grows slowly, so improvement is usually noticed after about 3 months, with fuller results by 6 months. Taking photos at each visit helps track progress.
Do hair loss medicines have to be continued?
For pattern hair loss, which is a long-term condition, some form of maintenance treatment is usually needed to keep the improvement. For temporary causes such as telogen effluvium, medicines can often be stopped once the hair recovers.
